The #19 West Virginia Mountaineers (18-6 7-4) welcome in the Oklahoma State Cowboys (14-10 4-7) this Saturday afternoon.

The Mountaineers won the Big XII opener in Stillwater 85-79, behind a strong second half. West Virginia trailed by seven going into halftime. They would outscore the Cowboys in the second half 46-33 behind 52% (13-25) shooting, 90.5% (19-21) from the free throw line and out rebounding Oklahoma State 22-12.

Six Mountaineers scored in double figures. Teddy Allen came off the bench and led West Virginia in scoring with 15 points, followed by Sagaba Konate’s 13 points and 9 rebounds.

Guards Jevon Carter and Daxter Miles both had 12 points. Carter’s 8 turnovers were a season high but had 7 assists, 5 steals and 4 rebounds.

Forward Lamont West got 9 of his 11 points in the first half and Beetle Bolden put up 10.

Oklahoma State is 1-4 in their last 5 games. They have struggled but proved they can beat anyone, beating Kansas in Lawrence last Saturday, 84-79.

Cowboy’s guard Tavarius Shine lead all scorers with 17 points the last time these two teams met but has missed the last four games and is out indefinitely due to a left wrist injury that has plagued him for most of Big XII play.

Starters:

Sophomore forward Cameron McGriff (6’7” 220-lbs) has started the last two games, averaging 12.5 points and had a career high 20 points last week versus Kansas. He played 18 minutes and went 4-4 in the first meeting against the Mountaineers.

Senior guard Jeffrey Carroll (6’6” 220-lbs) leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.5 points per game. Along with Shine, he led all scorers with 17 points in the first game. Also had 4 steals and 5 rebounds.

Senior guard Kendall Smith (6’3” 190-lbs) has averaged 17.3 points in the last three games. He’s been efficient from behind the arc, shooting 55.5% (5-9).  He had 4 turnovers and 7 points against West Virginia.

Sophomore guard Lindy Waters (6’6” 205-lbs) has played above his season average in scoring (8.6) in the last five games, averaging 11.2 points per game. Seven of his thirteen points came from the free throw line (7-8) in the first meeting, also contributing 4 steals.

Senior Forward Mitchell Solomon (6’9” 250-lbs) leads the team in rebounds, averaging 6.3 a game. Had 9 points and 8 rebounds in the first game versus the Mountaineers.

Coming off the bench:

Sophomore guard Brandon Averette (5’11” 185-lbs) is averaging 7.6 points on the year.  Has come off the bench and helped facilitate the offense averaging 4.2 assists in the last 5 games.  He had 6 points in the last match-up.

Junior forward Yankuba Sima (6’11” 225-lbs) scored 6 points in the first meeting against West Virginia. He has had a bigger role since Shine has been out but has had trouble finding his way only averaging 4 points in the last five games.

Sophomore guard Thomas Dziagwa (6’4”180-lbs) can come off the bench and light it up from three averaging 39.4% from behind the arc this season. Only played one minute in the first meeting.

The Mountaineers turned the Cowboys over 21 times in the first meeting in Stillwater. With West Virginia getting back to their roots and playing great defense over the last two games, they should have no trouble turningover Oklahoma State.

West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins said on the Brandon Lowe Show earlier this week, that all the players practiced this week for the first time since they all came down with the flu.

If the Mountaineers continue to play great defense, rebound and they are aggressive on offensive, then West Virginia will get their eighth win in the Big XII.
