Rankings: Best High-Major CBB Coaching Jobs Available
The 2024 offseason in college basketball is looking to be one of the more chaotic ones in recent memory. With the coaching carousel taking place, let’s rank the eight high-major jobs that are currently open.
1. Louisville
Historically the best program out of this group: three National Championships and seven Final Fours since 1980 if you’re not listening to the NCAA. Right now the program is at an all-time low, but the Cardinals can get back on track with a great hire.
2. Ohio State
Ohio State would be No. 1 on this list if we were going just off the current state of the programs. Buckeyes have great modern history off of the Thad Matta era and should make a smooth transition this offseason.
3. Michigan
Michigan has rich history since the late-80s. Like Louisville, the right coach can take advantage of the resources provided and bring the Wolverines back to prominence.
4. West Virginia
Some WVU fans will question being behind OSU and Michigan based on overall history, but the last year of the Bob Huggins drama now puts their next coach in a tough position to rebuild. Luckily for West Virginia, they have a solid history, a great fanbase and nice facilities. The last two-plus decades from Huggins and John Beilein have the Mountaineers in a much better spot than they were in 2002.
The West Virginia men’s basketball program has 31 NCAA Tournament appearances, 13 conference titles, has reached the Sweet 16 in 11 seasons, has 3 Elite 8 years, 2 Final 4’s, a national championship claim (1942) and is associated with some legendary basketball figures. WVU isn’t…

5. Oklahoma State
Oklahoma State is a historic program that has struggled to find consistency since Travis Ford. Could the Pokes ever reach the national success from the Eddie Sutton era? Probably not, but they should be in the NCAA Tournament most years.
6. Washington
The Huskies have made the NCAA Tournament once since 2011. With the move to the Big Ten, it’s unknown how that’s going to go for the Pac-12 basketball programs in a football-dominated move. Still a job coaches should consider.
7. Stanford
Mike Montgomery has been the only coach to take Stanford to national levels. If you can win here, you are really good at your job. As said above with UW, how will Stanford (and Cal) adjust to moving to the ACC? Also, tough to recruit undergraduate transfers with the prestige of the University.
8. Vanderbilt
Like Stanford, if you win here, you’re good at your job and you’re probably not staying for too long. SEC basketball just continues to get better as well.
