West Virginia University officials spoke with WVU men’s basketball assistants Josh Eilert and Ron Everhart on Thursday night, sources told Adam Zagoria. Zagoria’s source describes it as a “fact-finding call” and that no decision has been made at this time.

West Virginia is currently in-search of their first head coaching hire since Bob Huggins in 2007. Huggins resigned last weekend following a DUI charge. WVU has been conducting a national search but is considering internal options as well. Eilert has been with the program for the past 15 seasons. Eilert originally joined Huggins’ staff during his only year at Kansas State. Eilert was recently promoted to a main assistant role after Erik Martin took the South Carolina State job in July 2022.

Everhart has been with West Virginia since 2012 after serving as Duquesne’s head coach for six years. Everhart has also been the head coach of Northeastern and McNeese State.

Sources tell WV Sports Now that the players are starting to get impatient with the coaching search as they’re looking for answers on where the direction of the program is headed. Former WVU and Michigan head coach John Beilein’s name has surfaced and gained some steam all day Thursday. We’ll see if that’s the way WVU goes in this hiring process.

WVU F Tre Mitchell entered the transfer portal on Thursday as he becomes the first player to leave after Huggins’ resignation. Mitchell appeared in all 34 games for West Virginia this past season. The Texas transfer averaged 11.7 points and 5.5 rebounds on 47 percent shooting from the field and 36 percent shooting from three.
