Smith Lifts Tribe over Mountaineers in Game Two
The West Virginia Mountaineers (11-7) dropped game two of the doubleheader to the William & Mary Tribe (13-3) 6-4. Tribe catcher Hunter Smith drilled two homeruns, including five RBI’s to even the series at one.
The Mountaineers continued to stay hot in the first inning after a nine run performance in game one, when Ivan Gonzalez and Darius Hill had back-to-back 1 out single that set up Marcus Inman for an RBI double down the third base line that brought in Gonzalez. Kevin Brophy poked a sacrifice fly out to left field, bringing in Darius Hill for the early 2-0 lead.
West Virginia starting pitcher Jackson Wolfe gave up a solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth to Hunter Smith.
Inman started the sixth inning with a base hit back up the middle, then TJ Lake knocked a two-run homerun over the right field fence extending the Mountaineers lead 4-1.
In the bottom of the inning, Hunter Smith got the Tribe back within one on a two-run shot over the left field wall for his second homerun of the day.
West Virginia head coach Randy Mazey would go to it his veteran closer Sam Kessler in the seventh as Hunter Smith approached the plate with two on and two outs. Smith again stepped up for the Tribe hitting it deep to centerfield for a two RBI double giving William & Mary the lead 5-4.
Jack Cone stretched the lead in the eighth with an RBI single as the Mountaineers fell 6-4
West Virginia will look to take the series at 1:00 pm est inside Plumier Park.
