CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The WVU women will play in primetime, as the NCAA announced start times for the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday morning.

The Mountaineers’ second-round matchup against host North Carolina will start at 7 p.m. Monday night and be broadcast on ESPN2.

The sixth-seeded Mountaineers (25-7) will play the three-seeded Tar Heels (28-7) on their home court, Carmichael Arena, for the chance to advance to the Sweet 16 for just the second time in WVU history. The Mountaineers were in the same position last season. After defeating Princeton in the first round, WVU fell to host Iowa and national player of the year Caitlyn Clark in the second round.

WVU advanced to the second round with a 78-59 win over Columbia in its tournament opener Saturday afternoon. Star guard JJ Quinerly led the Mountaineers with a game-high 27 points, putting her over 2,000 for her career and moving her into sole possession of third-place all-time for scoring in WVU history.

North Carolinaย defeated Oregon State 70-49 in the nightcap Saturday. The Tar Heels led by two points after a hard-fought first half but pulled away in the third quarter. Lexi Darnoski led UNC with 19 points, while Maria Gakdeng finished with 13 and Alyssa Utsby, the program’s all-time leading rebounder scored 10.

The winner will advance to the Sweet 16 in Birmingham, Ala. to face either Duke or Oregon on March 28.
