Treysen Eaglestaff Heating Up for WVU Basketball at the Right Time
It’s no secret senior guard Treysen Eaglestaff had an underwhelming start to his WVU basketball career from a scoring aspect. However, that appears to be changing as of late.
Eaglestaff has turned it around for WVU basketball in Big 12 play, as he tallied his second straight 20-point performance in the team’s 75-63 win over Arizona State Wednesday.
Eaglestaff’s performance against Arizona State was very timely, as senior guard Honor Huff was kept in check by the Sun Devils. The 16.6 point-per-game scorer tallied just eight Wednesday.
The 23 points against Arizona State marked Eaglestaff’s tying of his season-high and his fifth 20-point performance this season. Through Big 12 play, Eaglestaff has averaged 13.3 points per game compared to 10.1 on the season as a whole.
In six Big 12 games, Eaglestaff has also shot 45.9% from three-point range compared to 36.4% on the season. His six mede threes against Arizona State marked his season-high.
Something to note about his recent offensive surge is how his other stats have stayed at the same level. He has still made a difference on the boards, leading the team in rebounds against ASU.
Now, the Mountaineers are tied with Iowa State and Kansas for fifth place in the Big 12 and sit at No. 57 in Kenpom. With just 12 games left in the regular season, the Mountaineers have a chance to keep climbing in the metrics.
As it stands today, eight of WVU’s final 12 games will be against teams ranked higher in Kenpom, with four being at Hope Coliseum. If the Mountaineers maintain their momentum and Eaglestaff keeps his rhythm, WVU could make a late push to be in the mix for March Madness.
WVU basketball will play again at 2 p.m. on Saturday When the Mountaineers take on No. 1 Arizona in Tucson.
