WVU Mascot Mary Mountaineer takes the field during the Backyard Brawl at PNC Park

Even though there are plenty of WVU fans in Pittsburgh, it’s still home to the Mountaineers’ arch rival. However, on Friday night, West Virginia took over the Steel City.

The crowd at PNC Park even started singing along “Take Me Home, Country Roads” when the song synonymous with West Virginia sports was played in the middle of the game.

Those cheering on the home team left disappointed – the Pirates lost 6-2 to the Texas Rangers, something Pirates fans are used to, but the strong WVU supporting crowd at least secured one win on the night.

Thanks to Pirates ace Paul Skenes, hearing a rendition of John Denver’s classic song isn’t a rarity in Pittsburgh. Skenes uses Charles Wesley Godwin’s version as his walk-up music.
