Watch: Victor Scott II Crushes First MLB Home Run
In just his second game back in the big leagues, WVU baseball alum Victor Scott II accomplished a career milestone. He crushed his first MLB home run on Tuesday night against Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Jeffrey Springs.

The St. Louis Cardinals recalled Scott on Sunday, marking his third stint in the big leagues this season.
A two year starter for the Mountaineers, Scott slashed .254/.368/.419 with 11 homers and 68 stolen bases in parts of three seasons in Morgantown, making his mark as a speedy baserunner and capable outfielder.
St. Louis drafted Scott in the fifth round in 2022. He rose quickly through the Cardinals’ system, finishing near the top of the minor league standings with 94 stolen bases in 2023, his first and only full season as a member of the farm system. Although he finished the 2023 season in Double-A, Scott made the Cardinals’ big league roster out of spring training this season but struggled mightily, picking up just five hits—three of them doubles—in 20 games.
He played another game with the Cardinals in June as an injury replacement before being optioned back to the minors.
Triple-A ball has provided similar challenges, as he’s slashing .219/.302/.318 with six homers in 74 games, but he’s beginning to heat up at the plate, posting an OPS of .993 in his past ten games.
With incumbent Cardinals’ center fielder Michael Siani headed to the injured list with an oblique strain that could cause him to miss significant time, Scott will receive another chance to secure a big league roster spot.
Mountaineers in the Pros
The Cardinals have established something of a pipeline with the Mountaineers in recent years, drafting superstar shortstop JJ Wetherholt in the first round of this year’s draft. Another of the highest draft picks in WVU Baseball history, Jedd Gyorko, played for St. Louis for part of four seasons, although the San Diego Padres initially selected him.
