WVU AD Wren Baker was asked about the current men’s basketball head coaching job during his media session on Wednesday. Baker says he’s not taking any inquiries about the position right now.

“The job is not open,” Baker said.

Josh Eilert, the team’s interim HC, is currently filling in the position for the 2023-24 season. Eilert is on a $1.5 million deal that expires in April 2024. Eilert replaces Bob Huggins, who resigned in mid-June after his DUI arrest. Eilert is entering his 17th overall season with the program.

Baker promoted Eilert on June 24 and will evaluate him on his day-to-day performance. West Virginia’s AD also mentions that there’s no benchmark or win total that he has in mind. Eilert’s performance will be evaluated at the end of the season with his contract ending in the spring.

Baker and WVU’s officials conducted a national search after Huggins’ resignation. The search went on for a week-long and included interviews with current Division-I head coaches. As players became antsy and entered the transfer portal, pressure was put on Baker to make a quick decision. That’s when WVU went with then-assistant Eilert.

“He has my full support,” Baker said on Eilert in June.
