WVU Baseball Drops Out of Multiple National Polls, Barely Stays in Others

It’s not common for a team to be celebrating a championship while simultaneously enduring a significant decline, but that’s exactly what’s going on with the WVU baseball program as they enter Big 12 Tournament week.

West Virginia capped off the regular season with the program’s first-ever outright regular season conference title, but did so despite being swept by Kansas. And despite the historic nature of the 2025 season and already securing one trophy, the Mountaineers have suffered a national punishment for their late-season collapse.

WVU may be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, but will be considered an underdog to advance nonetheless. The proof stems from Mountaineers now dropping out of multiple major national rankings all together.

Big 12 Tournament Field Set with WVU Baseball as Top Seed

D1Baseball removed West Virginia from their rankings, bumping Kanas in as a reward for their road sweep in Morgantown. WVU is also no longer ranked by Baseball America.

Conversely, Perfect Game and the USA Today Coaches Poll both still have Steve Sabins’ team inside its top 25 at No. 23.

West Virginia (40-13, 19-9 Big 12)ย will face the winner of No. 8 seed Cincinnati and No. 9 seed Texas Tech on Thursday, May 22 at 1:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. CT.

For a related story, the Big 12 Tournament field is set.
