Clemson is the No. 11 national seed and will host the regional that includes WVU, Kentucky and South Carolina Upstate. Clemson (44-16, 18-12 ACC) will start the regional against SC Upstate (36-23, 19-5 Big South), which won the Big South Tournament Championship. WVU (41-14, 19-9 Big 12) will open against Kentucky (29-24, 13-17 SEC).
WVU baseball has a rocky history against this regional field, being 2-11 all-time against Clemson and 2-12 all-time against Kentucky. WVU and SC Upstate have never met on the diamond before.
The winner of the Clemson Regional will play the winner of the Baton Rouge Regional, which includes No. 6 LSU, Little Rock, Dallas Baptist and Rhode Island.
The Mountaineers have made the NCAA Tournament for the third season in a row and the fifth time in the last eight seasons dating back to 2017. WVU advanced to its first Super Regional last season, falling to North Carolina. The 2017 NCAA Tournament was canceled due to COVID-19.
Under first-year head coach Steve Sabins, WVU baseball set a new program record for wins in a single season with a 41-14 record. Sabins’ Mountaineers also won the first outright Big 12 regular season title in program history with a 19-9 conference record.
Despite its stellar regular season, West Virginia struggled at the end of the year, losing six of its last games in the regular season and eight of its last 11. The Mountaineers then went 1-1 at the Big 12 Tournament in Globe Life Field, defeating Cincinnati before losing to eventual Big 12 champion Arizona in the semifinal round.
