WVU Football Finishes Recent Flip, Signing DB Tyrell Russell

Tyrell Russell officially becomes the final signee of the morning for the WVU football staff, signing only a week after flipping his commitment to the Mountaineers.

Russell announced his commitment to the Mountaineers on Nov. 26, becoming the second recruit to flip to WVU that day.

Russell was previously committed to Toledo. Regarded as an athlete by most recruiting outlets, Russell is a 5-foot-11, 175-pound cornerback out of Beechcroft High School in Columbus, Ohio.

Russellโ€™s versatility is what makes him an attractive addition to WVUโ€™s 2025 class.

He also had offers from Akron, Marshall and Nebraska.

He played for coach Steven Harris at Beechcroft High. As a senior, he totaled 94 carries for 745 yards and eight touchdowns. He also grabbed 30 receptions for 450 yards and two touchdowns. On defense, he tallied 16 tackles and one interception, including a pick-six. Finished his junior year with 42 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and three fumble recoveries. As a junior, he earned Second Team All-State and, First Team All-City and First Team All-District. Russell had over 2,000 all-purpose yards and 19 touchdowns on offense. Defensively, he tabbed 45 tackles and an interception. Three-star prospect according to ESPN, 247Sports, On3 and a two-star prospect according to Rivals. 247Sports evaluates him as the No. 99 cornerback and the No. 45 player in Ohio. On3 lists him as the No. 67 cornerback and the No. 27 player in Ohio. ESPN puts him in as the No. 74 cornerback and the No. 47 player in the state. He was recruited by WVU coach ShaDon Brown.
