West Virginia is prepared to give an opportunity to a highly coveted defensive back from the SEC. The WVU football staff has put themselves in the mix for Tennessee transfer defensive back John Slaughter.

According to the AP Sports Agency, WVU is one of at least 10 schools to show internet in Slaughter since he entered the transfer portal on April 16. Joining the Mountaineers in their pursuit of Slaughter are Cincinnati, Colorado, Florida State, Liberty, Memphis, Oklahoma State, Purdue and Tulane, with others expected to get involved as well.

Despite being a popular recruit out of high school in Clarksdale, Miss., the 6-foot-2, 195-pound Slaughter was never able to experience enough playing time on defense to produce at Tennessee. He recorded only six total tackles in two years as a Volunteer. Slaughter did contribute on special teams.

Slaughter was ranked as the No. 12 player in his class in Mississippi before picking Tennessee over offers from Florida State, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
