WVU Offers Lineman from Detroit

The West Virginia football program offered class of 2020 offensive lineman and defensive tackle Deondre Buford, from Martin Luther King Jr High School out of Detroit. The six-foot-five, 265-pound two-way big man thinks WVU is looking at him to play offensive tackle. He hasn’t had much contact with the Mountaineer coaching staff, partly due to the fact he is only a junior.

“I was definitely excited,” Buford said. “But I was very shocked as well.” Up until he received the offer, he hadn’t heard from the WVU staff, so he wasn’t expecting an offer.

Deondre has impressed several schools from around the country. He currently has offers from Akron, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Kentucky, Morehouse College, Pitt, Purdue, Syracuse, Toledo, Western Michigan and Youngstown State, in addition to the Mountaineers.

Buford isn’t familiar with the Mountaineer program but is interested in finding out more.

“I am definitely interested in visiting,” Buford said. “I want to visit all schools that have any interest in me because I want to make the best decision.”

Buford might sound undersized for a lineman at his current weight, but don’t be fooled. The current high school junior drives defensive lineman off the ball and uses his athleticism to get upfield and engage linebackers. He has a big frame and makes himself wide in pass protection. He’s got the strength to keep high-level defensive ends in front of him.
