WVU G Omar Silverio had his waiver denied by the NCAA on Thursday afternoon, the basketball team announced. Silverio is a transfer by way of Manhattan and Hofstra.

“I know Omar is disappointed that he won’t be able to compete this season as a Mountaineer and that his collegiate career is over,” WVU interim HC Eilert said. “He is a wonderful person, and I know he will be successful in whatever career path he chooses. All of us enjoyed our time with him, and we wish him well.”

Silverio (6-foot-3) last played at Hofstra during the 2021-22 season, averaging 10.9 points and 3.3 rebounds. The native of the Dominican Republic shot 37 percent from the field and 36 percent from three. Silverio left Manhattan after head coach Steve Masiello was dismissed just weeks before the season started, just like current Mountaineer Jose Perez. Silverio started his collegiate career at Rhode Island.

Silverio had one year of basketball eligibility left and now his collegiate career is over.

West Virginia now awaits the decision on RaeQuan Battle’s waiver. Battle transferred from Montana State but is a multi-time transfer during his undergraduate years.

WVU now has two scholarship spots remaining with Silverio out of the picture.
