WVU HC Bob Huggins During Big 12 Media Day: ‘We’ve Gained by Subtraction’

During the Big 12 men’s basketball media day in Kansas City on Wednesday, WVU head coach Bob Huggins reflected on last year’s team and what he looks forward with his new set of guys.

“Obviously we are going to be a lot better. We had a bad year last year. I think our guys have fantastic attitudes, their work ethic has been really good. It wasn’t so much that a year ago. I think we’ve gained by subtraction in some regards.”

Over the offseason Huggins and his coaching staff welcomed nine new players to Morgantown. Erik Stevenson (South Carolina), Emmitt Matthews (Washington), Tre Mitchell (Texas) and Joe Toussaint (Iowa) highlight the new-look for West Virginia this season. Stevenson, Matthews and Kedrian Johnson made the trip to Kansas City with Huggins to represent WVU. Matthews senses the different vibe that Huggins does.

“I think we still have that tough mindset. I think this team personality wise is way different than anything I’ve had before,” Matthews said on Wednesday. “We’ve got characters. We’ve got funny guys, guys that are super serious. But when we get in-between those lines it’s all basketball. We all want to win.”

With all of the new pieces, West Virginia poses a lot of question marks on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. West Virginia will begin to answer those questions when they host Bowling Green for an exhibition game on Oct. 28 and Mount St. Mary’s on Nov. 7 for the season opener.
