West Virginia redshirt junior kicker Casey Legg parlayed his excellence in kicking this season into a WVU scholarship, and now he’s seen his nearly perfect season noticed by national audiences too.

Legg was named as a semifinalist for the 2021 Lou Groza Award Thursday, adding another semifinalist honor to his resume this season.

Legg has been among the best kickers in not just the Big 12, but across college football, this season, missing just one field goal attempt. The Charleston, W.Va. native has connected on 14 of his 15 field goal attempts, including 13 straight to begin the season.

His lone miss came on a 38-yard attempt against TCU, otherwise, he’s made all of his attempts and all 25 of his point-after attempts. He’s 8-of-8 from 20-29, 3-of-4 from 30-39 and 4-of-4 from 40-49 — with a long of 49 yards.

Legg’s 14 field goals and .933 accuracy are both second-best in the Big 12, and his 49-yard long is good for fourth-best. He’s been nearly automatic when called upon this season.

He’s joined by Iowa State’s Andrew Mevis, Nevada’s Brandon Talton, LSU’s Cade York, Iowa’s Caleb Shudak, Colorado State’s Cayden Camper, Appalachian State’s Chandler Stanton, UNLV’s Daniel Gutierrez, Oklahoma’s Gabe Brkic, Missouri’s Harrison Mevis, Michigan’s Jake Moody, NIU’s John Richardson, Boise State’s Jonah Dalmas, Texas Tech’s Johnathan Garibay, Hawaii’s Matthew Shipley, Bowling Green’s Nate Needham, Wake Forest’s Nick Sciba, Ohio State’s Noah Ruggles, Texas A&M’s Seth Small and USF’s Spencer Shrader.

Three finalists will be announced on Nov. 23, and the finalists will be honored on Dec. 8 at the 30th annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Virtual Awards before the winner is announced on Dec. 9 at the Home Depot College Football Awards show.
