Regardless what happens on the field for Nicco Marchiol, he’s already being recognized for his work off of it.

The Allstate and the American Football Coaches Association announced Marchiol as one of their record-breaking 197 nominees for the 2025 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

This year, the members of the AFCA Good Works Team tasked in tackling issues like youth mentorship, mental wellness, homelessness and health care access.

For the second year, Allstate is partnering with the Wuerffel Foundation to align two of college footballโ€™s most meaningful honors: the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy. Together, they recognize student-athletes who demonstrate excellence in community service, academics and athletics.

โ€œWhen nearly 200 young athletes choose to serve, it creates a ripple effect far beyond the game,โ€ said Danny Wuerffel, former NFL quarterback, Heisman Trophy winner and College Football Hall of Famer for whom the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy is named. โ€œTheir leadership in the community is just as worthy of recognition as their performance on the field.โ€

Based on what took place during spring practice, Marchiol appears to be ahead in the quarterback battle and is WV Sports Nowโ€™s presumed starter at this point.

Early in spring, WVU head coach Rich Rodriguez was asked for a timeline to name his QB1. His response was offered with levity, but had some truth in it as well.

โ€œWhenโ€™s the first game,โ€ Rodriguez asked jokingly. โ€œDo we have a game time yet?โ€

Then after being told the date, he kept having more fun with his answer.

โ€œOkay, well if the game is at 1, [youโ€™ll know at] 12:59. Weโ€™ll know before thenโ€ฆto determine the starter, someone may separate themselves before the end of the spring, but they may not,โ€ he said.

In 2024, Marchiol completed 37-of-56 pass attempts for 434 yards, throwing five touchdowns with two interceptions and adding 120 yards on the ground. He started and won two games at Arizona and at Cincinnati.
