WVU Women Move Up Multiple Spots in AP Top 25 Poll

A convincing win over Oklahoma State has the WVU women’s basketball team up multiple spots in the AP Top 25 poll this week. WVU (17-4, 7-3 Big 12) moved up three spots from No. 21 last week to No. 18 on Monday.

WVU stifled then-No. 24 Oklahoma State, 54-37, in Morgantown on Saturday, avenging a January loss in Stillwater with one of their best defensive performances of the season.
The Mountaineers allowed just 11 made shots and two assists on the day, thoroughly dominating a Cowgirls team that entered play ranked No. 20 in the nation with an average of 80.6 points scored per game. Oklahoma State shot a miserable 21.2% from the floor and made just two of 23 three-point attempts. A 13-of-15 clip from the charity stripe prevented the game from looking like slaughter.
Oklahoma Stateโs defense wasnโt a slouch either, turning the Mountaineers over 20 times (West Virginia, for their part, forced 21 turnovers) and allowed just a 40.4 shooting percentage from the field, even though WVUโs shooting improved as the game went on.
Sydney Shaw led West Virginia with 18 points scored as foul trouble limited the effectiveness of JJ Quinerly and Jordan Harrison.
Other Big 12 teams in the Top 25 Poll are No. 9 TCU, No. 12 Kansas State and No. 25 Oklahoma State. Baylor and Utah received votes.
West Virginia made no movement in the NCAA’s NET Rankings, standing firm at No. 12. Kansas State (No. 7) and TCU (No. 10) are the only teams ranked ahead of the Mountaineers.
WVU plays twice this week, first hosting Kansas Wednesday at 7 p.m. for the program’s Black History Month Celebration. The Mountaineers then travel to Houston for a game on Saturday at 3 p.m.
