WVU Women’s Basketball Jumps Past Jayhawks 76-43

WVU Women’s Basketball saw their defense fire on all cylinders for the second game in a row on Wednesday, Feb. 5, crushing the Kansas Jayhawks 76-43 at the Morgantown Coliseum.
The Mountaineers began the game on an 18-0 run — the first eight of those points scored by Sydney Shaw, who dropped a game-high and new career-high 22 — not allowing a Jayhawks basket for the first 9:24 of the first period. West Virginia’s defense smothered Kansas from the outset, forcing 13 turnovers in the first ten minutes and 29 on the day.

While the Mountaineers quickly built a commanding lead, going into the break with a 39-19 advantage, they did so with few contributions from star shooting guard JJ Quinerly, who racked up two quick fouls and played just ten minutes in the first half (22 for the game). Wearing tape on one of her hands, Quinerly appeared to be dealing with an injury and went into the break without a single point scored. She managed to bounce back in the second half, however, dropping 16 points in 12 minutes and vaulting herself into sixth place on the Mountaineers’ all-time scoring leaderboard.
After a sleepy third period that saw the Mountaineers make just four of 11 shots, slowing things down as they coasted with the lead, they ratcheted up the heat in the final frame. Despite getting just 16 of 50 total minutes from their starters, West Virginia outscored the Jayhawks 24-14 on the way to the 30 point win.
Up next for WVU Women’s Basketball is a Saturday, Feb. 8 road date with the Houston Cougars, set to begin at 3 p.m.
