WVU Women’s Basketball Overcomes Poor Shooting in Comeback Win
WVU Women’s Basketball gritted out a 66-53 comeback win against a tough BYU team on Saturday, Jan. 4, picking up their second Big 12 win in a row.
Although the No. 18 ranked Mountaineers (12-2, 2-1 Big 12) converted on just 34.7 percent of shot attempts, they took 28 more shots than the Cougars did, winning the turnover battle 31-8. Those extra possessions stolen were enough to secure the win.
After West Virginia took a 10-6 lead in the first four minutes, BYU limited the Mountaineers to just one made field goal for the rest of the opening period, shaking off any rust accumulated during the 2,000 mile trip from Provo and surging ahead with a 12-1 run.
West Virginia fought back to tie the game 22-22 off a Sydney Shaw three midway through the second quarter before the Cougars pulled ahead once again.
Kylee Blacksten and JJ Quinerly drained threes in the last 73 seconds of the half — the latter at the buzzer — to cut the Cougars’ lead to 30-28.
The Mountaineers took control of the game out of the half, with JJ Quinerly making layups on four consecutive possessions to put West Virginia ahead 42-37, a lead they never relinquished.
Mark Kellogg’s WVU women’s basketball team will hit the road for their next game, taking on Texas Tech at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
