WVU Wrestling Wins Fourth Straight with Victory Over Princeton
The No. 22 ranked WVU Wrestling team picked up its fourth consecutive victory after defeating Princeton 27-12 on Saturday night inside Jadwin Gymnasium.
The victory marked the Mountaineers’ first-ever triumph over the Tigers in just the second meeting between the two squads. Princeton took the lone previous matchup 34-9 in 1978.
West Virginia claimed the first four bouts of the match and six of the first seven to build an insurmountable lead over the Tigers.
Sasha Gavronsky began the match with a 5-1 victory over Cody Tavoso at 157 pounds. Peyton Hall, ranked No. 3 at 165, improved to 18-0 on the season with an 18-0 technical fall victory over Zander Silva.
Brody Conley and Dennis Robin followed with wins at 174 and 184 pounds, respectfully, to put West Virginia ahead 15-0.
No. 28 ranked Conley picked up his second major decision victory of the season by defeating Xavier Giles 9-1. Robin (No. 17) edged Kole Mulhauser 11-8.
Princeton got on the board at 197 pounds with Michael Squires’ 7-4 victory over Ian Bush. Michael Wolfgram answered for West Virginia by pinning Will Sather at 285 before Jace Schafer received a forfeit win at 125 to put the match out of reach.
Princeton claimed the final three bouts to close out the meet.
Mountaineers freshman Mason Kernan fell to Dan Jones 6-5 at 133 points in Kernan’s dual meet debut. Jordan Titus was dropped via a 7-2 decision to Eligh Rivera at 141.
Sam Hillegas was then defeated by No. 7 ranked Ty Whalen 17-13 at 149.
West Virginia (7-1, 1-1) will next face Iowa State in a Big 12 matchup on Wednesday night inside the WVU Coliseum.
