A Stunner in Stillwater: WVU Runs All Over Oklahoma State to Stay Unbeaten in Big 12 Play
Knowing Oklahoma State was in desperation mode entering the game, WVU did their best to bury the Cowboys. And despite an early injury to Garrett Greene, the Mountaineers mounted a lead so big that they were able to coast to another Big 12 win, 38-14.
After settling for a field goal on their opening drive, West Virginia experienced a brief moment of concern when Greene left the game with a shoulder injury following a 39-yard run. But as Greene was attended to, the offense didn’t miss a beat with Nicco Marchiol under center. In fact, Marchiol fired a bullet to Traylon Ray for his first touchdown pass of the season at the end of the first quarter.
That score was also just the tip of the iceberg for the Mountaineer offense, granted the defense performed on the top of their game as well. On the ensuing possession after defensive back Jaheem Joseph ruined an Oklahoma State drive with an interception, Greene returned to action and picked up right where he left off, sprinting into the end zone for a touchdown of his own.

But Oklahoma State wasn’t completely dead yet. OSU quarterback Alan Bowman and the Cowboys would respond by putting together their first successful drive of the day, making the score 24-7 after a touchdown.
However, WVU brushed their shoulders off and remained in control throughout the rest of the half. Greene led the Mountaineers on another scoring drive before CJ Donaldson capped off the next drive, putting a fourth West Virginia touchdown on the scoreboard. WVU carried a commanding 31-7 advantage into the locker room at half time.
With 259 yards on the ground, West Virginia accomplished the most rushing yards in a single half for any WVU team since 2015.
An injury to Ollie Gordon coupled with WVU’s aggressive mindset to go for it on multiple fourth downs kept momentum firmly on the side of the Mountaineers throughout the rest of the third quarter despite the score remaining the same.
It took some time, but Donaldson scored his second touchdown of the day with just under 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter on a drive highlighted by a 40-yard catch by Hudson Clement.
For WVU’s top performers, Garrett Greene finished the game 9-for-15 for 159 yards passing. He also ran for 86 yards. White put together his best performance of the season so far, running for 158 yards with a staggering 8.3 yards per rush.
All in all, West Virginia ran all over Oklahoma State en route to a 38-14 win. The victory moves Neal Brown’s team to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big 12.
WVU will now return home for a showdown with Iowa State. The Mountaineers and Cyclones are set to kickoff at 8 pm ET on Oct. 12. WVU will debut their new Coal Rush uniform under the lights next week.
The Saturday night atmosphere will also serve as the backdrop to Iowa State quarterback Rocco Bechtโs father Anthony being honored. Former Mountaineer Anthony Becht was unable to attend his induction into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame and will be honored when his son is in town.
