Morgantown, W.Va. — WVU Baseball moved within one win of their first-ever trip to the College World Series on Friday, June 5, defeating Cal Poly 11-2 in Game 1 of the Morgantown Super Regional. West Virginia moves to 44-15, tying the program record they set in 2025 for wins in a single season.

Armani Guzman got the Mountaineers going on the first pitch they saw, doubling to left-center. Paul Schoenfeld drew a four pitch walk and Sean Smith lofted a home run to left-center, his first of three hits on the afternoon. West Virginia right-hander Chansen Cole struck out the side in the second and third innings before giving up a leadoff home run in the fourth.

Cole began to labor from there, facing a pair of full counts in the inning. He managed to complete seven frames nevetheless, striking out 11 batters on 121 pitches as the Mountaineers’ bats spotted him a massive lead. Smith doubled to begin the bottom of the fourth; Matt Ineich walked and Brodie Kresser singled home a run. Ben Lumsden drew a free pass to load the bases, setting up a grand slam from nine-hole hitter Tyrus Hall that pushed the lead to 8-1. Cal Poly ace Griffin Naess left the game soon thereafter.

The Mustangs got one back in the seventh, but West Virginia answered with a two-run double from Ben Lumsden and a sacrifice fly RBI from Hall, keeping their momentum strong. Reese Bassinger and Carson Estridge covered the final two innings.

WVU Baseball will look to clinch their series with the Mustangs beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 6.
