Breaking: WVU Football Brings Pat White Home to Join Coaching Staff

To put an exclamation mark on the new WVU football staff, Mountaineer legend Pat White is making a triumphant return to West Virginia to work under his former coach. WVU revealed adding White as assistant quarterbacks coach/assistant to the head coach on Wednesday.
“It’s really special to welcome Pat White back to Morgantown as a member of our football coaching staff,” Rodriguez said about bringing White home. “He has been involved in some of the biggest wins in program history, and he will be a great presence in our quarterback room. Pat and I have been through so much together, and I am really proud of the quality of coach and mentor to young players that he has become.”

Soon after Rodriguez was hired in December, White actually publicly pitched why he should return and be part of the staff while appearing on a show with fellow WVU legend Adam “Pacman” Jones.
“It would be nice to be back in them mountains man, back connecting with my guy, Rich,” said White. “Morgantown is a second home,” White told Jones at the time.
White’s coaching resume speaks to why he does make sense for a spot on Rodriguez’s staff. Most know White as one of the most electrifying quarterbacks in college football history, but White petitioning for a job isn’t the same as any former player arguing for a chance to be coach back at their alma mater.
Since wrapping up his playing days, White has spent many years coaching all over the country at several different levels of football. He’s coached in various different roles at places like Alcorn State, Alabama State, Campbell, USF and most recently as an offensive assistant with the Los Angeles Chargers.
White even coached in WVU’s 2024 Gold-Blue Spring Game.
White’s bio as a player:
As Mountaineers Nation is well aware, White is widely recognized as one of the most explosive and accomplished players in college football history. While at West Virginia, he was named Big East Offensive Player of the Year back-to-back seasons (2006-07). He led them to a 35-8 record and became the first quarterback to start and win four bowl games in program history.
Statistically, White threw for 6,051 yards and 56 touchdowns and ran for 4,480 yards and 47 scores on the ground, which set a then-NCAA record for rushing yards by a quarterback. White was honored a first-team All-Big East (2006-08) player three out of his four years as a starter in college. He was inducted into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
Following his record-setting career at West Virginia, White received a chance to play in the NFL after being selected by the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He played in 13 games as a rookie and spent part of the 2013 season with Washington. White also spent time with the Virginia Destroyers of the United Football League (2011) and the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (2014).
