Mountaineers in the Pros

Dallas Cowboys Claim Former WVU Quarterback Will Grier Off Waivers

Will Grier

Will Grier had one of his signature moments at West Virginia against Texas in Austin, Texas, leading the Mountaineers to a 42-41 victory in 2018 with some late-game heroics.

While Grier hasn’t had any signature moments in his brief NFL career, being cut by the Carolina Panthers Tuesday morning before the NFL’s roster cutting deadline, he’s going to get another chance in the NFL in Texas.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Dallas Cowboys claimed Grier off waivers Wednesday morning, joining a depleted quarterbacks’ room with the potential to earn a spot.

Despite a strong showing in the preseason for Grier, completing 22 of 31 passes for 222 yards and a rushing touchdown, he lost the battle for the Panthers’ backup quarterback spot to P.J. Walker. While the Cowboys do have Dak Prescott firmly entrenched as the starter, depth quarterbacks Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci were released Tuesday.

The Cowboys have Cooper Rush currently penciled in as the backup quarterback, but it appears Grier will once again have a shot to compete for a backup position.
