The 2023 NBA season marks a new chapter in the basketball career of former Mountaineer star Jevon Carter. And on Wednesday night, Carter debuted as the newest member of the Chicago Bulls.
Unfortunately for Carter and his new team, game one didn’t exactly go as planned. Chicago lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder 124-104 and Carter only managed to score three points in the game. He was one for four from the field, but did record a couple assistant and a rebound.
The Bulls made sure to capture Carter’s first regular season basket for his hometown team on their X (Twitter) account.

Once Carter signed with a young Bulls roster this past summer, he instantly was cast into one of the leadership roles on the team based on his experience.
After signing with the Bulls as a free agent in June, Carter spoke with the media on earlier in October on Bulls Media Day. Carter talked about his excitement about joining the team he grew up rooting for and how he feels about being cast as a veteran leader after spending most of his pro career as a role player.
“What I bring to the table is really going to help this team. I just want to win,” Carter said with conviction when asked what he offers the Bulls. As one of the more veteran players on the roster, Carter also understands that he will be expected to help lead a mostly young team.
He’s comfortable transitioning into a leadership role, but knows he will need to make sure he conveys the message properly. “Yeah, I am. I think I just need to do a better job of learning how to deliver the message,” responded Carter when asked directly about if he’s prepared for the responsibility.
Carter wasn’t the only one talking about what he brings to Chicago. NBA All-Star DeMar DeRozan seems thrilled to be able to call the WVU legend a teammate.
“He used to get on my nerves in Phoenix & in Milwaukee to be honest… he was just a dog out there… that just shows the type of player he is, looking forward to be able to compete,” said DeRozan.
Jevon Carter, who grew up in Oak Hill, Illinois, says playing for the Chicago Bulls is a dream come true.
“It just be a dream, something I’d wish would happen. Something I would go on 2K and create me a player for the Bulls and have him number 5 starting point guard position.”
The WVU product was most recently with the Bucks for a season and a half after signing with Milwaukee in February 2022. Before that, Carter played for the Brooklyn Nets for a season, was able to experience the NBA Finals with the Phoenix Suns and was drafted in the second round of the 2018 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies. Carter averaged 7.6 points per game during his Bucks tenure, including 8 per game throughout this past season. While mostly coming off the bench, Carter did have some big performances in brief starting opportunities and even gained notoriety among his peers.
