WVU Basketball guard Honor Huff speaks at a WVU press conference

Honor Huff was a splash addition for the WVU men’s basketball team when he signed this offseason, but he wasn’t always viewed as a game-changing sharpshooter like he is now.

After being overlooked by many schools due to his height, standing at 5-foot-10, Huff received an offer from head coach Dan Earl at VMI.

“I jumped on it right away,” Huff said in a press conference Thursday. “And obviously they saw a talent in me that passed that and saw that the good in me and the talent in me that most people didn’t at the time. So I was just grateful for that.”

Earl took the head coaching job at Chattanooga in 2022, and Huff followed him. Between his two eligible seasons, Huff averaged 16.2 points per game and led the Mocs to an NIT Championship this year.

After a total of four years with Earl and his staff, Huff decided it was time to move on.

“So I think after this season, you know, we won the NIT with a number one seed in our conference, I felt like this was the time, you know, where I didn’t go against my integrity,” Huff said. “You know, I won for them. I did great, and it was time to take that next step and play at the next level.”

Huff has become an offensive powerhouse, as he led the nation in three-pointers made last year with 131. However, he now plays for Ross Hodge, who takes pride in his defensive mindset as a coach. Huff and his camp thought the new strategy may help him succeed at the next level

“I think we kind of looked at it as opportunity, a great opportunity to expound on my defensive capabilities and grow it and enhance it. So I think that’s what Coach Hodge has done thus far,” Huff said.

Huff said Hodge is “gritty,” and expects the same from his team. As of now, Huff feels like he has answered that calling.

“He’s a very gritty coach, and he wants us to play gritty and, you know, have a little chip to us, have a little something to us. And I think I bring that,” Huff said. “I’ve always been underestimated, overlooked my whole career still to this day. So I just think that’s what I bring, that kind of grit.”

Despite his size, Huff emphasizes his effort and intensity on the defensive end, letting his mindset make up for his frame in more ways than one.

“I don’t see it as a detriment at all. I think, you know, it depends on who you are as an undersized guard. And I don’t really use that as an excuse. I think I’m 7-foot-4 at heart, if I’m being honest with you,” Huff said.
