The status of quarterback Garrett Greene was the one thing that loomed over West Virginia’s Backyard Brawl win throughout the weekend.

Unfortunately for curious and concerned WVU fans, head coach Neal Brown left that up in the air while addressing the question during his weekly press conference on Monday. Brown classified Greene’s status as unknown by saying “it’s too early to say” about if he could be able to play this coming Saturday.

“I think it’s too early to say. I think a lot of it has to do with how he responds over the next few days. We won’t utilize him unless he can use his best skill set which is his athleticism,” said Brown to further elaborate on Greene.

This update comes just two days after Brown said he would hope to know more concerning Greene’s health on Monday.

Following West Virginia’s 17-6 victory against Pitt in the 106th edition of the Backyard Brawl, Brown said Greene was in a boot following the injury and will provide an update on Greene’s status on Monday. Brown noted Greene wanted to try and test out the injury but was held out the remainder of play.

Garrett Greene finished the game with a limited stat line, throwing two incompletions on two attempts. Nicco Marchiol replaced Greene and completed six passes on nine attempts for 60 yards and a touchdown. Marchiol earned a 159.3 passer rating and completed 67% of his throws.
