After taking a day to let it all sink in, Steve Sabins, who WVU announced will be its next baseball head coach on Monday, wanted to offer a message of thanks to Mountaineer Nation.

Sabins used the tweet from the official account of the WVU baseball program with the news to put the past 24 hours into perspective. “My family is proud to be a small part of what Coach Mazey has built at WVU. We are thankful we get to continue to be surrounded by the players, staff, and families we cherish. The outpouring of love and support has been insane and appreciated. Nobody does it like WVU,” said Sabins.

West Virginia started the week by revealing a succession plan for Randy Mazey. WVU confirmed the rumors and reports that Mazey would be retiring from coaching at the conclusion of the 2024 season. Mazey will stay with the school and move into another role. At that time, Sabins will become the 20th head coach in program history.

Sabins, who has been on Mazey’s staff for 8 years, hails from Austin, Texas. Throughout his tenure with West Virginia, Sabin has helped lead the charge in developing the WVU hitters and has been a big part of the recruiting effort that has brought in some of the best classes in the program history.

After initially starting off at WVU as just an assistant coach in 2018, Sabin has worked his way up to recruiting coordinator in 2018 and now assistant head coach, a position he’s held since 2022.
