The evolution of the WVU Coliseum floor designs

Published

on

WVU recently released video footage of the newly completed basketball court at WVU Coliseum. This is the sixth floor design since the Coliseum opened in 1970. Bringing back the state outline at center court is one of those key features that will set WVU apart from other schools in the country.

But lets take a look back at what got us here…

From 1970 through 1990 WVU’s court featured “WVU” running through the state outline of West Virginia at center court. The words “West Virginia” in white run up and down the baselines.

In 1991 we saw the introduction of the Flying WV at center court and removed the state outline. Also, “West Virginia” was written on the court in cursive. This design only lasted one season.

From 1992 through 1999 we saw “NCAA” at center court but the blue outline of the state of West Virginia returned. The baselines said “Mountaineers” in gold. At the free through line saw “Atlantic 10” in white.

From 2001 through 2008 we saw the flashiest design to date. Gold basketballs were painted in the middle of each free throw line and inside the arc was blue. The Flying WV was at center court in blue. The Big East logos were located near the three-point lines. “Mountaineers” was painted in gold along the bench sideline.

From 2009 through 2019 WVU emphasized the gold more. Gold sidelines and the lane under the basket was gold. Center court was still the Flying WV in blue. The Big East logo was at the free throw lines and changed to the Big 12 logo when WVU changed conferences in 2012.

Which brings us to the now. A fresh face to WVU Coliseum will be coming this winter which brings together the historic past with the excitement of the future. Utilizing the gold and blue in specific areas really help make this court unique. From bringing back the state outline, to the mountains along the student section baseline, a lot of details went into creating this design.
