Troy Fischer Trying Something New | WVU Football All 105
All 105 is a West Virginia Sports Now series profiling each member of the 2026 WVU Football Roster.
Many college football players switch positions after their high school careers end: linebackers often bring experience at running back or tight end, while many cornerbacks also doubled as wide receivers.
It’s rare to see players switch positions late in their college career, but thatโs exactly what redshirt senior Troy Fischer, formerly a walk-on at D-III Christopher Newport, will attempt with the Mountaineers this season. The team listed him at tight end and long snapper during the 2025 campaign; their updated roster this season lists him at linebacker.
Fischer stands 5-foot-11 and weighs 216 pounds, so a middle linebacker role likely fits his body type better than tight end did. As his college career nears its end, the veteran could earn some snaps on special teams or as a reserve in lopsided late game scenarios. Despite his status as a former walk-on โ at a Division III school, no less โ the fact that Fischer made it through the round of cuts WVU Football made while paring down their transfer-heavy roster last season is a testament to his locker room presence.
48 โข Troy Fischer, redshirt senior linebacker
Last Year: A late addition to the 2025 roster, WVU Football listed Fischer as a tight end last season. While he didnโt appear in a game, he doubled as a reserve long snapper.
Stats: N/A
Post-Camp Outlook: West Virginia has solid depth at middle linebacker, and Fischer will need to deal with the challenge of a position switch. As a redshirt senior, however, expect him to earn playing time late in games or on special teams.
Projected Role: Expect some snaps in a reserve capacity for Fischer.
Accolades, Highlights: Position changes arenโt a new thing for Fischer, who served as a fullback in high school.
