Watch: WVU Football Bringing Throwback Uniform Back to Life

Much of what’s old is new again within the WVU football program. In keeping with the theme of the return of an old head coach, former players on the staff and a new mentality that harkens back to the glory days of the past, the Mountaineers will debut a a new throwback uniform in 2025.
On Monday, West Virginia revealed a fresh new take on the program’s helmet and uniform from the 1965 season. This announcement even makes a past comment from WVU director of athletics Wren Baker a reality.

Last May, Baker responded to fan’s post with old helmets by saying he’s a “massive” fan of the 1960s ear gold helmet with WVU over a baby blue state design and that the 2025 season would mark 60 years since 1965, one of the special seasons in the program’s history.
I am a MASSIVE fan of that โ65 helmet with the baby blue state sticker. 2025-1965 = 60 years

The Mountaineers won one of the program’s 15 conference titles in 1965, going 4-0 in Southern Conference play. And with the Backyard Brawl set to take place in Morgantown in 2025, it’s important to note West Virginia won the 1965 edition at old Mountaineer Field, 63-48.
It remains to be seen which home game WVU decides to wear this new throwback uniform.
Rich Rodriguezโs second tenure as head coach of the Mountaineers will officially kickoff at home on August 30 as West Virginia hosts Robert Morris.

I was at the 63-48 game in 65, in the old stadium. Someone threw an empty liquor bottle from the top of the stands near the bowl section, landing just a few feet in front of a state trooper on the field. The trooper jumped into the stands after him, and the thrower was quickly pointed out and removed.
The game itself was amazing – was Allen McCune the QB?
