As the transfer portal continues to take over the offseason of college basketball, West Virginia was recognized as one of the best teams in the country in additions.

College basketball analyst Andy Katz ranked the teams thus far who have won the offseason. Katz put the Mountaineers in the second tier, which consistent of four teams per tier.

“West Virginia. Joey Toussaint goes from Iowa to the Mountaineers, perfect fit for Bob Huggins,” Katz said.

As of April 22, WVU is ranked No. 9 in the country in transfer portal additions, according to EvanMiyaEvanMiya is a computer-based website that tracks all types of production statistics in the world of college basketball. The website has West Virginia as the best portal team in the Big 12.

Over the last month, Bob Huggins and his coaching staff have been able to acquire Erik Stevenson from South Carolina and Toussaint from Iowa. Both incoming players are veteran guards who present great defense and energy to the team.

Stevenson (6-foot-3, 198 pounds) will be looking to play for his fourth school in college, as he has one year of eligibility left. The Lacey, WA, native played at Wichita State for two seasons, then returned home to play at Washington, before playing for Frank Martin last season at South Carolina. During his sole season in Columbia, Stevenson averaged 11.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists on 33 percent shooting from three. Stevenson shot 98 percent from the free-throw line, missing only one free shot all year.

Toussaint (6-foot, 190 pounds) spent three seasons at Iowa under head coach Fran McCaffery, appearing in 98 games for the Hawkeyes. The Bronx, NY, native averaged 4.3 points, 1.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.4 steals per game. Toussaint had a 2.3 assist to turnover ratio this past season. Toussaint shot 42 percent from the field, 25 percent from three and 83 percent from the free-throw line.

With the JUCO additions of Mohamed Wague and Jimmy Bell Jr., West Virginia is left with just one open scholarship for next season. It appears as the coaching staff may look to add multiple players and make room for that. Huggins went to Connecticut on Monday, visiting UConn transfer Akok Akok. Akok is set to visit Morgantown next week.

West Virginia has been in contact with many available transfers around the country. WV Sports Now will keep up to date with the latest recruiting and transfer portal news during the offseason.
