West Virginia’s Steve Sabins Named National Coach of the Year
Hours before his team was set to take the mound for the first-ever College World Series in WVU baseball history, Steve Sabins received a high national honor for his work in leading West Virginia on an historic run to Omaha.
On Friday, Sabins was named the Mike Martin National Coach of the Year, as presented by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
In only his second season as head coach, Sabins led WVU to a 45-15 record, runner-up finishes for both the Big 12’s regular and conference tournament titles and then NCAA Regional and Super Regional series wins.
After taking over for his predecessor Randy Mazey in 2025, Sabins guided the Mountaineers to a 44-16 record, a Big 12 regular season title and a NCAA Regional win.
Sabins was named the ABCA East Region Coach of the Year, the sixth time that a WVU head coach has earned the honor. Multiple players earned awards throughout the season as well, including four players being named All-Big 12 – Griffin Kirn (1st Team), Logan Sauve (1st), Jack Kartsonas (2nd), and Kyle West (2nd). Sam White was also named to the ABCA All-East Region First Team.
During Sabinsโ tenure in Morgantown, the Mountaineers have produced record-setting numbers offensively, while also bringing in the highest-ranked recruiting classes in program history. That includes the 2018 class, ranked No. 21 nationally โ the Mountaineersโ first top-25 recruiting class ever. A year later, the 2019 class added to the program’s momentum, checking in at No. 23 nationally, marking the first time WVU signed back-to-back top-25 classes.
Overall, Sabins holds a 89-31 mark, winning .731% of his games.
