This evening, former Mountaineer basketball legend Jerry West, also known as “The Logo” was awarded with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The Medal of Freedom is recognized as the highest civilian award of the United States. The medal is awarded to individuals who contribute to the nation’s security, world peace, natural interests of the U.S. and cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

West thanked the president for the honor and gave a statement.

“It never ceases to amaze me the places you can go in this world chasing a bouncing ball. My chase began in Chelyan, West Virginia, where I strung a wired basket with no net to a side of a bridge. If your shot didn’t go in, the ball rolled down a long bank and you would be chasing it forever.” You can continue to hear the rest of his statement below.

Jerry West was a 14-time NBA All-Star and is a Pro Basketball Hall of Famer. He played a major role of constructing some of the many great Los Angeles Laker teams. Recently, he helped formulate the Golden State Warriors dynasty and now, has moved onto the Los Angeles Clippers and has signed key free agents Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.

There’s no doubt about it, Jerry West was not only a legendary Mountaineer, but was a great NBA player and to this very day, is still recognized as one of the best front office executives in the league.
