WVU Kicker Casey Legg Goes Public with Decision to Retire from Football

He reached the pinnacle, or “the top of the top” as Casey Legg put it while informing a reporter of his plans to retire from football.

Legg broke the news, speaking on it for the first time publicly, to West Virginia Metro News’ Taylor Kennedy on the Kanawha Valley Sports Report show. The high school soccer player turned Power 5 kicker at WVU explained he made the decision that he was done and did not want to play anywhere else. Legg said that even included the NFL.

But in addition to not being interested in pursuing the NFL, he will also not return to the Mountaineers. A redshirt junior, Legg could have kicked at Milan Puskar Stadium for one more season.

Despite not having the traditional pedigree as a football kicker, although that also didn’t matter for the program’s all-time leading scorer in Pat McAfee, who also came from a soccer background, Legg finishes his time wearing the Old Gold and Blue with an impressive resume.

In 37 games played, Legg made 40 out of 49 field goals attempted and successfully converted 88 of 90 extra points. Legg was perfect across the board until missing two kicks in his final game in front of Mountaineer Nation against Kansas State this year.

Legg earned Co-Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week honors following his late-game field goal ending up being the difference in WVU’s Thursday night win over Baylor.

In arguably West Virginia’s biggest win of a tough 2022 season, Legg drilled a 25-yard field goal as time expired to award the Mountaineers the program’s first victory over Oklahoma sine joining the Big 12.

Now that an improbable career comes to an end, once a Mountaineer, always a Mountaineer applies to Casey Legg.
