WVU Women Secure HBCU Star Kierra Wheeler

The hits keep coming for the WVU women’s basketball team in the transfer portal, as Norfolk State star Kierra Wheeler announced her commitment to the Mountaineers Sunday evening.

Kierra Wheeler (6-1) was a senior forward at Norfolk State, where she averaged 15.8 points and 8.9 rebounds this past season. She earned first-team All-MEAC and All-MEAC Defensive Team honors. She finished third in her conference in scoring, second in rebounding, first in blocks (2.4) and fourth in steals (1.9).

Norfolk State finished 30-5 this season. Wheeler scored a season-high 28 points in the MEAC Tournament semifinal against Coppin State as NSU went on to win the MEAC and qualify for the NCAA Tournament, where the Spartans lost to Maryland in the first round.

As a sophomore, the Minnesota native averaged 17.6 points and 9.7 rebounds while bing named the 202 MEAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year. Wheeler began here career at Daytona State in 2021-22 before transferring to Norfolk State, where she played three seasons.

Wheeler originally committed to transfer to Auburn on Friday, but then decommitted later that same day.

Wheeler is the fourth transfer portal pickup by the Mountaineers this offseason along with Wisconsin’s Carter McCray, Texas Techโ€™s Loghan Johnsonย andย Butlerโ€™s Riley Makalusky. After being one of the smallest teams in the country the last two seasons, WVU coach Mark Kellogg appears to be prioritizing size this offseason with Wheeler (6-1), McCray (6-1), Makalusky (6-2) and Johnson (5-10).
