The Mountaineers thought they had their quarterback of the future, but Cincinnati ended up winning the commitment of Pennsylvania’s top rated quarterback.

Samaj Jones, a four-star recruit who attends the prestigious St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia, broke the news that he’s going to Cincinnati on Sunday after teasing the possibility he would announce his much-anticipated decision on Friday night.

Jones, who took his official visit to WVU on June 2-4, recently narrowed his school choice down to a top four, with West Virginia fans excited to see their team made that list.

Cincinnati, Oklahoma, Penn State and WVU were his final four schools. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 203 pounds, Jones is the eighth-ranked player in Pennsylvania, the No 22 quarterback and the No. 371 player nationally, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

Jones also took official visits to Cincinnati and Oklahoma. He did not mention one with Penn State despite the Nittany Lions being viewed as the favorite to eventually land his commitment.

As a junior, Jones threw for 2,525 yards and 32 passing touchdowns to go along with 740 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns as St. Josephs Prep went on to win the Pennsylvania 6A State Championship.
