Jason Cross Jr. Set Up to Start Someday | WVU Football All 105
All 105 is a West Virginia Sports Now series profiling each member of the 2025 WVU Football Roster.
Jason Cross Jr. took a redshirt year during his first season with the Mountaineers, and stuck with the program through the regime change from Neal Brown to Rich Rodriguez.
The 6-foot-1, 185 pound safety is a natural athlete who played all over the gridiron in high school at Pittsburghโs prestigious Bishop Canevin, including at cornerback, wide receiver and quarterback. Per the WVU Football roster, Cross gained 14 pounds between last season and the present day, added bulk that will help him bring down opposing players at the Power Four level.

Camp outlook:ย West Virginia’s secondary struggled mightily in 2024. With a series of transfers brought in to overhaul the position group, Cross could make his presence known in an open competition.
Projected role:ย On the heels of a redshirt season, expect Cross to begin dipping his toes into the college game, perhaps snaps on special teams or as a reserve rather than in a starting role. The Mountaineers’ roster makes a distinction between safeties and nickel package safeties, who only come in on passing downs. Listed as a true safety, that would indicate the WVU Football coaching staff sees Cross as a starting-caliber defensive back at some point in his college career.
Accolades, highlights:ย Cross earned various All-State, all-section and all-conference honors during his high school career. He also played in the Big 33 game, held between the top high school recruits in Pennsylvania and Maryland, at the end of his senior year.
