Despite a change in the coaching staff, it appears there’s still a strong mutual interest between WVU and a nearby recruit with NFL blood. Lawrence “Jay” Timmons made it known West Virginia is still interested in him when he revealed Rich Rodriguez’s staff re-offered the WPIAL athlete on Feb. 2.

Tipping off which position the new staff is recruiting him for, Timmons said West Virginia cornerbacks coach Rod West called him with his latest offer.

Even though Timmons, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound 2026 prospect with experience at cornerback, nickel and wide receiver, still has another season of high school football left at Western Pennsylvania powerhouse Pine Richland, he’s been a West Virginia target for over a year. Neal Brown’s staff offered Timmons in October after he took multiple trips to WVU throughout the summer and fall.

Some of Timmons’ other recent offers include Bowling Green, Connecticut, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Maryland, UNLV and Wisconsin.

Timmons offered some insight to WV Sports Now about a trip to WVU for a camp in June.

โ€œWest Virginia, I got my 4.4 (40-yard dash). I felt like I did better in the individual drills because my hip flexor was feeling better. But the one-on-ones, I felt like I dominated as well. It’s just hard work that I feel is paying off.โ€

The young Timmons also talked about his connection to WVU tight ends coach Blaine Stewart, who worked with the Steelers before returning to West Virginia, and how heโ€™s helping to make him feel more wanted by West Virginia than Pitt.

โ€œI feel like WVU is staying more in touch with me than Pitt. Like, Blaine Stewart. He’s staying real in touch with me,” said Timmons.

Besides working out, what all did Timmons do at WVU?

“I got a tour after the WVU camp, and I got to talk to the head coach in his office and he told me he’s gonna get me down in July with my family. So that would be super fun. I really like the coaching staff at WVU.”

A son of an NFL Pro Bowl linebacker and Super Bowl champion, Timmons has been playing all over the field at positions like nickel, safety, cornerback and even some wide receiver in high school. As is common for young players, he’s still trying to figure out where he fits best. He’s considered a three-star prospect by national outlets.

If Timmons ends up wanting to stay close to home in the region, it sounds as if he’s leaning West Virginia when it comes to any decision between the Backyard Brawl rivals.

โ€œI really hope WVU shows some interest in me and if they give me an offer, that would be a dream come true, really. And same with Pitt, like I said before, like WVU, I feel like they show a little bit more interest,โ€ said Timmons early in the process with both schools.
