WVU transfer Tre Mitchell

According to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, WVU transfer Tre Mitchell is starting his visit to Kentucky on Saturday. The Wildcats have been linked to Mitchell all week as the Pittsburgh native entered the portal officially on Friday.

Kentucky head coach John Calipari and his coaching staff have struggled to retool their roster through the transfer portal but do bring in the top high school class in the country. Expect Kentucky’s staff to go all-in on Mitchell as they’re desperate for some veterans in the transfer portal.

Mitchell has also received interest from DePaul, Georgetown, Kansas State, Kentucky, Memphis, Oklahoma State, Xavier and others. Sources tell WV Sports Now that Mitchell is also considering a return to West Virginia but a head coaching decision is needed quick.

Mitchell (6-foot-9) appeared in all 34 games for West Virginia this past season. The Texas transfer averaged 11.7 points and 5.5 rebounds on 47 percent shooting from the field and 36 percent shooting from three. Mitchell was a consistent starter who helped return WVU to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2021. Mitchell skipped out on declaring for the NBA draft to return to West Virginia for his final year of eligibility but that changed with the coaching search looming.

Mitchell has one year of eligibility remaining.

WV Sports Now will keep you up to date with the latest on Mitchell’s recruitment as well as the coaching search.
