Sencire Harris is the fifth Mountaineer to enter the portal since the season ended, joining fellow sophomore Amani Hansberry, freshmen Jonathan Powell and KJ Tenner and senior Tucker DeVries, who is following former WVU coach Darian DeVries to Indiana. Harris’s entrance to the portal means all of WVU’s major rotation pieces from this season have either graduated or transferred.
A defense-first guard, Harris transferred to WVU from Illinois last offseason. He and fellow former Illini Hansberry followed associate head coach Chester Fraizer.
The NCAA’s transfer portal officially opened Monday. It will stay open for 30 days and close on April 22.
Harris started every game in his only season with the Mountaineers, averaging 5.9 points in 26.8 minutes per game. He led West Virginia with 54 steals and was named to the All-Big 12 Defensive Team.
Harris struggled offensively at times, shooting just 39.7% from the floor and 11.3% from three. He started the season 0-28 on three-pointers. Harris scored a career-high 13 points in a win over TCU on Feb. 25 and reached double-digit points two other times.
The immediate future for WVU basketball remains unclear as athletic director Wren Baker continues the process of hiring a new head coach.
