Tucker DeVries will have surgery for an upper-body injury and miss the remainder of the season, WVU basketball officially announced Tuesday. DeVries, the Mountaineers’ star senior, has been out with an upper-body body since Dec. 10, missing 13 games in that time.

“Since early December, we have consulted with our team doctors and numerous medical professionals to evaluate and treat Tucker’s injury,” WVU coach Darian DeVries said in a statement. “Tucker did everything he could to get back on the court this season, but unfortunately it has been determined by all parties involved that surgery is necessary. He will be out of action for approximately three months.”

Coach DeVries had been silent about the status of his son ever since the injury was first announced. He announced that the program will apply for a medical redshirt for Tucker to return and play for WVU next season.

“We will apply for a medical redshirt and certainly look forward for Tucker to come back healthy for his final year,” Coach DeVries said. “As I’ve said before, we have a great bunch of guys in the locker room who have rallied around him during his absence. I have complete confidence in our team that they will continue to do so.”

Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reported Tucker DeVries will have surgery on his shoulder Wednesday. DeVries had shoulder surgery this offseason. It is not confirmed to be the same shoulder.

DeVries played eight games for the Mountaineers this season after following his father from Drake. The two-time Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year was averaging 14.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.7 steals while shooting 47.3% from three. He had a signature game in the Mountaineers’ win over Arizona at the Battle 4 Atlantis, scoring 26 points with eight three-pointers.

WVU has gone 8-5 without DeVries with wins over top-10 wins over Kansas and Iowa State. Freshman Jonathan Powell has been in the starting lineup since DeVries’s injury.

West Virginia travels to TCU for its next game Wednesday at 8 p.m.
