WVU Basketball Recruiting
WVU Basketball Ranked as High as No. 2 in National Portal Rankings
The WVU basketball program is making waves in the transfer portal, landing as high at No. 2 and induce the top 20 in multiple national rankings.
As a major development early in the offseason, Ross Hodge and his staff have been rewarded by being ranked No. 2 in On3 Sports’ latest poll.
Ironically, only Indiana, led by former WVU head coach Darian DeVries sits ahead of the Mountaineers.
West Virginia is also at No. 16 in the most recent 247 Sports Portal Rankings as of Wednesday, April 15.
Along with being 16th, WVU is No. 5 in the Big 12 with 21.87 points. The Mountaineers sit behind Houston, Iowa State, BYU and Cincinnati.
WVU has secured commitments from three transfers: forward Javan Buchanan, guard Finley Bizjack and center Mohammad Sylla. Sylla and Bizjack are both listed as four-star recruits.
Buchanan spent the past two seasons with Boise State after transferring from the NAIA level. Buchanan averaged 12.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game during the 2025-26 season. He appeared in 37 games and was named the Mountain West Sixth Man of the Year.
Known for efficient offensive prowess, Bizjack became a starter for Butler the last two years after seeing limited action off the bench as a freshman.
His best shooting season was during the 2024-25 campaign when he shot 44% from the floor and 42% from three. Last season, he dipped to a 42.6%, but upped his points per game from 10.3 to 17.1.
A former four-star prospect out of Belle Vista Prep in Arizona, Sylla is listed at 6-foot-10 and 240 pounds. He will join WVU as a sophomore after recording 9.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.2 blocks and shooting 57.9% from the field during the 2025-26 season.
Sylla decided to move on from Georgia Tech after the firing of Damon Stoudamire, who finished with a 42-55 record in three seasons.
