WVU Football Tumbles to New Low in ESPN FPI
Baylor snapped West Virginia’s win streak and sent WVU backwards and tumbling to a new low in the ESPN FPI (Football Power Index). The Mountaineers are back to their worst spot of the season, being placed at No. 54.
WVU’s 49-35 loss to the Bears triggered a three spot drop after sitting at No. 51 last week.
The devastation of another home loss coupled with Traylon Rayโs injury created a very somber mood for WVU after the game on Saturday night.
โI get the fansโ frustration. Iโm frustrated. You gotta be able to win at home. Our people here deserve to see wins,โ said head coach Neal Brown.
Somber Mood Surrounds WVU Football Following Baylor Loss, Ray Injury
That comment embodied the entire theme of Brownโs postgame press conference.
โWe have a disappointed group. I love them and thatโs unconditional, but we didnโt play well enough,โ added Brown.
Brown then admitted that Rayโs injury sparkled an emotional downward spiral that was just simply difficult to overcome.
While West Virginia still has a chance at a postseason, granted not the one they dreamed of all offseason, both Garrett Greene and veteran linebacker Reid Carrico, who was named Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Week, mentioned that they are only focused on just trying to get a win in the next game.
Greene also evaluated his performance in his first game back in about a month as โokay but not good enough to win.โ He completed 19-of-39 passes for 237 yards and then ran for 129 more, all while scoring four total touchdowns.
The loss evens WVUโs overall record to 5-5 while dropping their Big 12 mark to 4-3, officially making the rest of the season simply about winning at least one more game to earn a postseason.
For a related story, WVU fans voiced their disgust about West Virginiaโs third straight home loss.
