What Became of the 2023-24 WVU Basketball Team Members

The 2023-24 WVU basketball season can argue as the worst in the history of the program and was one most fans want to forget.
Following that nine-win campaign, regarded as perhaps the worst in program history, the Mountaineers cleaned house. Nearly every player or coach associated with that team left WVU and landed somewhere else.
Coaches
Josh Eilert – Interim Head Coach
Eilert was not made the permanent head coach following the season, with WVU instead hiring Darian DeVries from Drake instead. Eilert became an assistant coach at Utah in the offseason, eventually serving as the Utes’ interim head coach for the final five games of the season. Utah went 1-4 under Eilert, who will likely be on the move again this summer as the Utes hired Alex Jensen as their permanent coach.
Da’Sean Butler – Assistant Coach
The WVU hall-of-famer returned to his alma mater for his first major conference coaching job. After one season back in Morgantown, Butler took a job as a player enhancement coach with the Boston Celtics, reuniting with former WVU teammate Joe Mazulla.
Alex Ruoff – Assistant Coach
Another former Mountaineer, Ruoff began his coaching career at WVU in 2022 before joining Eilert’s staff last season. He has since become an assistant coach with the Greensboro Swarm in the G-League.
Jordan McCabe – Assistant Coach
A fan favorite in his playing days, McCabe’s coaching tenure with the Mountaineers lasted just one season. In the offseason, he was hired as an assistant coach at Green Bay under Doug Gottlieb.
DerMarr Johnson – Assistant Coach
Johnson was a coach for one season at WVU and it appears he is now out of coaching.
Players
Ofri Naveh
The only player to stay at WVU after last season. He chose to redshirt this year and did not appear in a game for the Mountaineers.
ReaQuan Battle
The center of a multi-state lawsuit against the NCAA’a transfer policy, Battle played 22 games for WVU, averaging a team-high 16.1 points. He’s been in the G League this season, averaging five points across 24 games.
Quinn Slazinski
Slazinski averaged 12.3 points playing in all 32 games for WVU. He’s also in the G League this year, averaging 2.5 points in 23 games.
Jesse Edwards
WVU’s prized transfer addition, Edwards averaged 15 points and eight rebounds for the Mountaineers. Edwards recently made his NBA debut with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He has appeared in two games.
Kerr Kriisa
The Mountaineers’ point guard averaged 11 points and 4.7 assists last season. He transferred to Kentucky in the offseason, where he only played nine games before suffering a season-ending injury.
Kriisa has committed to transfer to Cincinnati for the 2025-26 season.
Seth Wilson
One of several former Mountaineers who are now playing for the Akron Zips. Wilson averaged 6.3 points this year, starting the final 21 games of the season.
Josiah Harris
Harris joined Wilson in Akron this year, although he didn’t make as big of an impact, averaging 8.7 points in six games before going out with an injury. The Zips won 28 games this year and claimed the MAC Tournament championship to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Patrick Suemnick
Suemnick was the only Mountaineer transfer to stay in the Big 12, transferring to Oklahoma State. He averaged 3.2 points and 2.1 rebounds in 31 games for the Cowboys.
Kobe Johnson
Johnson transferred to St. Louis, where he started 26 games this season. He averaged 6.2 points as the Billikens went 19-14.
Noah Farrakhan
The other player impacted by the lawsuit against the NCAA, Farrakhan ended up playing 23 games for WVU basketball last year. He transferred to Hampton for this season where he averaged 13.3 points for the 17-16 Pirates.
Jeremiah Bembry
Bembry didn’t play much for the Mountaineers and he didn’t play much this season at Oakland, appearing in nine games for the Grizzlies.
Ali Ragab
The seven-footer redshirted last year for WVU basketball and transferred to Northern Arizona for this season. He appeared in 20 games, averaging less than two points.
