MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia Mountaineers capped off the 2025 season on brisk Saturday afternoon of a holiday week with only a chance to play spoiler on the line. Unfortunately for WVU fans, they would soon wish the season ended before kickoff.

Texas Tech quickly showed why they entered the day the No. 5 team in the country, sandwiching a an eight-play, 57-yard touchdown drive in between two three and outs for WVU.

And while the Mountaineers struggled to even produce a positive play, the Red Raiders continued to click all day long. Wanting to ensure their fans don’t even have to sweat and can start packing for the Big 12 Championship Game, Behren Morton and Cameron Dickey produced 145 total yards to WVU’s 0 through each team’s first two possessions.

Then, after Rich Rodriguez decided to go for it on fourth down, hoping to spark some type of momentum, Texas Tech was set up for a third score before the second quarter following a turnover on downs. Morton would find Caleb Douglas in the back of the end zone, pushing the Red Raiders’ insurmountable lead to 21-0.

Morton was 13-for-17 for 121 yards and two touchdown passes after just one quarter of play.

It would take until the 12:25 mark of the second quarter for the WVU defense to stop Texas Tech. That momentum wouldn’t last long though, as Texas Tech responded with an 11-play, 73-yard drive for their fourth score.

Despite some glimpses of opportunity for Scotty Fox, who was 11-for-18 for 85 yards in the first half, an interception in the final minutes to squander away a couple big plays that finally built a drive.

Texas Tech was back in business at the open of the second half, increasing their lead to 35-0. Morton had 310 yards passing with an efficient 78 completion percentage early in the third quarter.

The game continued to get out of hand from that point on, moving the scoreboard to 49-0 – where it stood until the clock read 0:00.

WVU concludes the 2025 season at 4-8 (2-7, Big 12) as the focus now instantly shifts to how to get better for next year.
