WVU Basketball Learns Seed for Big 12 Tournament, Winning Tie Breakers Due to Series Sweeps
With the 2025-26 regular season over, Ross Hodge is now tasked with leading WVU basketball in the Big 12 Tournament.
After wrapping up their season with a convincing win over UCF on Senior Day on Friday night, West Virginia had to wait for the conclusion of Saturday’s games to learn the seed for the conference tournament. At 9-9 in Big 12 play, the Mountaineers will be the seventh seed and earn a single-bye.
West Virginia earned the No. 7 spot due to being undefeated against the other four teams who also finished at 9-9.
Overall, Hodge’s team went 18-13 in his first regular season at the helm of the Mountaineers. And due to the up and down nature of the season – West Virginia is currently off Joe Lunardi’s bubble, they’re in need of a deep run through the Big 12 Tournament, if not win it, to have a shot at playing for a national title.
WVU was on the bubble after the team’s victory over No. 19 BYU, but fell off again immediately after losing to Kansas State on the road. They are currently listed at No. 58 on KenPom.
West Virginia has a resume of a 70-54 win over Mount Saint Mary’s, a 73-65 win over Campbell, a 69-47 victory over Lehigh, a 71-49 domination of Pitt in the Backyard Brawl, a 81-59 blowout win over Lafayette, a 70-38 routing of Mercyhurst, a 91-49 blowout win over Coppin State, a 90-58 win over Little Rock, an 86-51 win over MVSU, two wins over Cincinnati, a 86-75 upset over Kansas, a convincing 72-61 win over Colorado, 75-63 road win at Arizona State, a gritty 59-54 win over Kansas State, a 74-63 comeback win over UCF, a 79-71 victory over No. 19 BYU and a 77-62 win over UCF to close out the season.
